ANNOUNCING THE 2026 ROO RESIDENT
- bell hooks
The FIFE Cooperative Cohort (CoHo) provides support to explore and develop at any stage in the process. The Cohort draws inspiration from the writing of bell hooks' and takes its name from her book, Feminism Is For Everybody (FIFE), and focuses on the concept of intersectional feminism, building a diverse community, and the holistic integration of art into life.
Unlike traditional residency or fellowships, the FIFE CoHo is designed with flexibility and real-world artistic practice in mind. Cohort members are encouraged to work across multiple projects and collaborate freely, reflecting the dynamic, interdisciplinary nature of contemporary creative work. By removing rigid project constraints, the program fosters experimentation, cross-pollination, and deeper community engagement.
Artists receive 72hours of no-cost studio space over three months to develop mission-aligned work, as well as access to Bechdel Project's equipment, access to Materials for the Arts for warehouse shopping, locker storage, Fiscal Sponsorship (2% fee), letters of support or grant-sponsoring organization support, unrestricted access to Bechdel Project staff to connect about project development, and general mentorship. There's also the opportunity for cross-collaboration and skill-sharing among cohort members. In exchange, artists contribute 27 hours of volunteer service to support Bechdel Project’s operations, programming, and outreach over three months. This reciprocal model affirms the value of artists not only as creators but as essential collaborators in sustaining a thriving cultural ecosystem.
The FIFE CoHo is part of Bechdel Project’s ongoing commitment to supporting women, non-binary, and underrepresented storytellers through innovative, equitable, and community-driven approaches. As the organization continues to evolve in response to the needs of its artists, the CoHo represents a meaningful experiment in what a more just and cooperative arts infrastructure can look like.
The FIFE Coho is by invitation only. The best way to be considered is to participate in our SPACE GRANT PROGRAM.
